The back story to this house was a Sherlock Holmes type affair with our client discovering the mid century gem hiding at the end of a cul-de-sac. After much detective work to track down the owner, he was convinced to sell. Embracing an understated Palm Springs vibe, our design approach was to celebrate the abundance of natural light and unique 360 degree views through the house by focusing the plan around the internal courtyard as the natural asset.
We demolished old doors and divisions that wrapped around the courtyard space, taking out the floral wallpaper and shag pile carpet along with it, to better connect the public spaces together. A large central fireplace now loosely divides the living and dining, whilst a super size breakfast nook houses the neighbourhood kids in the kitchen. The bedroom wing leads to a master suite designed with a second internal garden aspect.
The client’s strong desire to move away from the mid-century pastiche, led the interpretation of finishes to focus around teak stained oak reminiscent of the 60s mixed with leathered granite, verdant marble, upsized mirrors and swathes of alabaster white paint to bounce the light around. Lovingly completed in stages over 4 years, it’s a home we hope Slim Arons would want to hang out in.
